Rio Rancho Pop Warner Cheer & Tackle.

Rio Rancho Pop Warner Cheer & Tackle.

Will there be travel involved?
This is probably the biggest misconception with Rio Rancho Pop Warner and not all teams will travel.

Traveling is at the discretion of each coach, last year we only had one coach that elected to travel and they traveled to El Paso, TX. This year both our 11U teams are wanting to compete locally, regionally and nationally if their teams continue to advance.

Home Games are playing in Rio Rancho, typically at a school facility. Away games are typically played in Belen, Los Lunas or Albuquerque.

What ages do you offer?

Football is for ages 5-14
Cheer is for ages 3-14

How do I register and what paperwork is required for registration?

Registration can be done at any of our free skills & drills camps at Cabezon park through the summer

You can also register at www.rioranchopopwarner.com

Required paperwork includes (please see registration checklist)

  • Copy of athlete's Birth Certificate
  • 2023 Pop Warner Medical/Physical Form
  • 2023 Player Participant Contract
  • 2022/2023 Report Card
  • Headshot Photo
What does my child get for the registration fee? why is football and cheer so expensive?

Each season it costs our organization approximately $350 per child to participate in football and cheer. Only a portion of the registration fees we charge each participant cover these expenses. What monies we raise in our fundraising efforts and from generous donations help us to subsidize the remaining costs. The cost factors within our organization are:

  • Practice Fields
  • Game Day Uniforms: 2 jerseys, integrated pants and helmet decals (approx $130/per football and $180/per cheer)
  • Game Day Fields
  • Referee & EMT Fee's
  • Insurance
  • Trophies
  • Conference Fee's
  • End of the year awards and banquets
  • Coaches bags and equipment
Helmet, shoulder pads, cleats, mouthpiece and equipment is not provided by rrpw and is the parents responsibility.
Please see the 2022 RRPW Financial Report for a full breakdown of cost.

How are Head Coaches Selected?
Head coaches are elected every year. Association approval is required for all coaches, returning or not, prior to each season. To be a coach with Rio Rancho Pop Warner is a privilege, not a lifetime job, and previous coaching experience does not guarantee a coaching position for the upcoming season.

What qualifications or certifications are Head Coaches required to have?
All Head Coaches, staff and Board Members must pass a thorough background check. One staff member on each team must be certified in First Aid/CPR. Football coaches must be certified by Heads Up Football. Cheer coaches must be certified by YCADA (Youth Cheer and Dance Alliance).

When does the football and cheer season begin and end?
Practice begins August 1, the first (pre-season/scrimmage) game is generally the last week of August, this is the coaches discretion if s/he feels their team is ready. Our regular season games begin labor day weekend and the league championships are at the end of October. Tackle Football teams and cheer squads that qualify for bowl games, regional championships or cheer competitions may be active through early December if they reach the National Championship level (this is at the discretion of each coach and if they choose to participate after the regular season.

Before practice starts, how will I know what’s going on and what I have to do next?

The next events that will happen after registration are:

  • “Team Meeting” – After teams are formed, your Head Coach will host a team meeting for parents and players/cheerleaders. Separate meetings will be held for players and cheerleaders. At this very important meeting, you will officially meet your entire team staff. Your Head Coach will preview his or her team rules, goals, and coaching philosophy, review what to expect in terms of individual and team discipline, the procedure for handling any issues and concerns you may have, and answer any and all questions regarding the upcoming season. This meeting is mandatory for all parents, players, and cheerleaders. These meetings will take place after July 15th when registration officially closes.
  • Uniform fittings will also happen between July 15th and August 1st.
  • Each team will have a "paper work" day, where athlete's will hand in required paper work.
  • Rio Rancho Pop Warner wants you to have the most current information available. Please continue to check our website, www.rioranchopopwarner.com. We are also social! Check us out on Facebook and Instagram. Additionally we send frequent emails and text so make sure you are subscribed.

How often are games and practices? What is the time commitment per week?

Until Labor Day, tackle football and cheer squads will practice five days per week up to a maximum of 2.5 hours per day including break and team business time. . After Labor Day, tackle and cheer team’s practice up to 6 hours per week.

All games are played on the weekends at various times and locations throughout Rio Rancho and surrounding communities. Home games are played at a Rio Rancho School.

It is essential that vacations and other events are scheduled around football and cheer. If participants miss more than 7 consecutive days of practice, we are required to drop them from the team to which they have been assigned.

Who does rrpw play?
We typically play other Pop Warner associations in NM, such as Duke City Outlawz, Los Lunas Tigers, Belen Eagles and we also play teams from out of state, each year Pikes Peak Pop Warner travels to ABQ area to play and bring multiple teams in each age group.
In 2022 we also played ABQ teams from other football organizations, Alamogordo, Grants and teams from surrounding towns.

We are very excited this year as a new Pop Warner league has developed in Las Cruces and Flagstaff so we are excited to be hosting them this year as well.

How much will my child play in football and what position will he play?
Decisions about playing time and positions are made by the coaches of the team, and are the final responsibility of the Head Coach. National Pop Warner rules require (the Minimum Play Rule or MPR) that players who attend all scheduled practices will play at least 8 to 12 plays in a game (most games include 20-60 plays).

Coaches will make playing time and position assignment decisions based on hard work, practice attendance, experience, demonstrated skills at assigned positions, game performance and concern for player safety. Keep in mind that all teams at all levels want to win games and no coach wants to put a player in an unfair situation where he has little chance of succeeding or a high chance of injury. First time players should expect less playing time than returning, experienced players until they gain confidence and demonstrate their abilities to their Head Coach.

Head Coaches are encouraged to carefully evaluate players on a week to week basis and there are many factors with a first year player, over time will gain more playing time based on improvement shown.

Where are the practices held?
Specific practice times will be provided by your Head Coach just as soon as they have been finalized. Practice times are scheduled between 5:00 & 8:00, depending on your head coach and field availability. Your Head Coach will also provide this information to all families at his or her team meeting.
